FAQ

Who may register to vote?

Anyone who is a US Citizen and is a resident of the county/city for 30 days before the election may register to vote.  The voter must be 18 years of age or may pre-register to vote at 16 or 17 (but will be unable to cast a ballot until they are 18 years old).

How will they be notified?

The applicable County Board of Elections will notify a client if their voter registration application is accepted or declined.  If no response occurs within 6 weeks or before an election, clients should contact their County Board of Elections.

What is the deadline to register?

Currently an application must be received 10 days before the election in which the voter wishes to vote.  Agency sites will transmit any completed registration forms to County Boards of Elections at least every 10 days (the State Board of Elections recommends every 7 days), and on registration deadline days.  The State Board of Elections will send postcards to remind sites of important registration deadline dates.

How does the voter know where to vote?

Once a voter is registered, they should receive a confirmation notice that contains their polling place location.  If a notice is not received in 6 weeks or before an election, clients should contact their County Board of Elections.  Voters can also look up their polling locations using the State Board of Elections Voter Lookup option by clicking on the following link:  https://voterlookup.elections.ny.gov/

How to change a name and/or address?

The online registration portal or the voter registration form can be used to change a name or address. Notices of change of address from registered voters received at least 15 days before a special, primary or general election by the County Board of Elections must be processed and entered in the records in time for that election.

How to change party enrollment?

The online registration portal or the voter registration form can be used to change a voter’s party enrollment. An application to change one's party enrollment for the primary election in any year must be received by the County Board of Elections no later than February 14th of that year.

How to cancel a voter’s registration?

To have an individual’s name removed from the voting rolls, the voter must send a written letter to the local County Board of Elections where the voter lives requesting to have the registration cancelled. It must be a written letter; it cannot be accomplished via email. Contact information for all County Boards of Elections is available at the County Boards of Elections page.

Will someone have to serve jury duty if they register to vote?

Maybe, but jurors are also selected from tax rolls and the DMV registry.

Must someone enroll in a party to vote?

No, everyone can vote in a general election if registered to vote. However, only members of an enrolled party can vote in that party’s primary election.

May a homeless person register?

Yes, however they will have to supply a physical location on their voter registration form for the purpose of assigning an election district. In addition, a mailing address must be provided where they can receive mail.

What if a voter will be away on election day?
